The debut full-length work of the famous storyteller and a kind of analog of Tim Burton - Guillermo Del Toro was filmed in Mexico, for very little money. That at all, did not prevent it to get a lot of international prizes at various festivals, as well as to draw the eye of Hollywood producers, who wanted to get Del Toro. To be honest, I personally didn't understand why there was such a frenzy.
I found the movie incredibly drawn out, boring and just a worthless spectacle. A simple plot of about 30 minutes of screen time here lasts for an hour and a half, and some episodes seem so ridiculous, that by God, a couple of times I wanted to just turn off the TV and be done with it. If I hadn't read in the description that it was about a vampire, I wouldn't have thought twice about it. Yes, the character licks blood off the floor with his tongue, but that could mean anything. The basic attributes of a vampire are not here.
Of course, fans of Del Toro can say that the main thing in the tape is its meaning, a fairy tale for adults. I can not disagree with this, after all, the director is talented and talentless pacifier he would never release. Peculiar subtexts and moral dilemmas pop up throughout the movie, but damn, it still turned out to be somehow too naive and underplayed. I don't even know how to explain it, but the movie turned out a bit silly.
To whom there are no complaints at all, so it is to the cast. Federico Luppi amazingly conveyed all the metamorphoses of his character, in some moments playing just with his eyes. This is worth a lot. Ron Perlman plays here, of course, on the machine, but thanks to his charisma, he still organically fits into the entourage of the tape. The only thing is that the character himself turned out to be too cartoonish.
Chronos - not the best work of the famous director, but I think it is forgivable when it comes to the debut. Perhaps, in its time this tape really impressed the audience, but now it is worth watching only for the nostalgia of old fans, not to attract new ones. That, I think, is the main problem with this tape. But thanks to it, Del Toro went to Hollywood, so I guess there is something in it....
