Kirill Sokolov’s Hollywood debut can safely be called a success. Having apparently been given carte blanche and let loose, our compatriot confidently carved out a niche for himself among films like "The Cabin in the Woods", "I’m Going to Look for You", "The Hunt", and other gory slasher films. Yes, the plot here is derivative, and the main intrigue could have been revealed a bit more slowly to prolong the suspense, but within the genre, it’s not about the content but the execution. And in that regard, the film is spot on.
First, in terms of gore, this is a veritable feast and bacchanalia. Severed limbs and heads, gouged-out eyes, splattering brains, and the aftermath of stabbing, slashing, bludgeoning, and gunfire are depicted with gusto and to the max—blood gushes in fountains. Plus, the juiciest and funniest dark humor, which is perfectly on point here.
Second, in terms of visuals and technical execution—it’s top-notch. Masterful cinematography, brilliantly choreographed fights, plenty of visual treats—you can see the creativity and imagination. Yes, Kirill is clearly channeling Quentin, Robert, and Guy, but if Aronofsky does it, why shouldn’t the rest of us follow suit? The pacing is excellent—there’s no time to get bored, the action unfolds at breakneck speed, and there are plenty of classic dialogue jokes to boot.
The ensemble cast is top-notch as well. Zazie Beetz plays a badass fighter perfectly, and Patricia Arquette and Tom Felton are excellent as villains. But the one who really steals the show is the ageless Heather Graham, who looks gorgeous at nearly 60 and has plenty of hilarious scenes—I was laughing out loud.
In short. If you love bloody, stylish, beautifully shot action-slasher films with a raw, gritty feel and dark humor, and if you’re a fan of films like *The Hunt*, *I’m Going to Find You*, *Grindhouse*, and *The Cabin in the Woods*—then this is a must-watch. It turned out to be a wild ride, and it’s all packed into a solid 90 minutes. A real treat, that’s for sure!
