Directed by seasoned professional John Frankenheimer, this environmental thriller tells the story of a river contaminated with industrial waste, resulting in the birth of a number of mutants, one of which began attacking people.
Unlike other ecohorror filmmakers, Frankenheimer was actually interested in environmental protection, and that's why he created not just a monster horror, but a kind of warning. That's why a lot of time is devoted to the investigation of the logging company's activity, as well as to the characters. This, of course, will seem boring to some, but the initial episode, as well as the spectacular final massacre, will hardly seem so. Frankenheimer, as a master of action, succeeds very well in terms of atmosphere in all the scenes with the monster. It's just a pity that he didn't make any more horror films, unless you count 'The Island of Dr. Moreau', which was not so successful.
