I expected to see a heartfelt melodrama that would bring tears to my eyes. At first, the film seems to be just that, but then it unexpectedly changes direction, revealing new facets of perception. This is not surprising, as it is based on a novel by William Burroughs, a landmark figure of the Beat Generation, whose work has always been distinguished by an unconventional view of reality.
The plot takes the viewer back to the 1950s and follows an expatriate writer who spends his days in a small circle of acquaintances in Mexico City. His life changes when he meets a young, mysterious man who awakens a strong emotional attachment in him. Their relationship is complicated — there is more silence than words between them, and the balance of power is constantly shifting. At the heart of the story is a search for self, loneliness, and the desire to understand whether it is possible to hold on to what attracts us so strongly.
The emotional tension in key scenes is captivating, evoking feelings similar to those experienced when watching Kill Your Darlings. The story keeps you in suspense, making you root for the characters.
Eugene, played by Drew Starkey, is particularly memorable — mysterious, silent, and magnetically attractive. He is perfectly contrasted by Daniel Craig's character, who is charismatic and passionate. Craig's performance is magnificent: bold, sincere, and without a hint of insincerity.
The musical accompaniment deserves special mention. The soundtrack, which includes Nirvana and New Order, gives the film a boldness, while the instrumental compositions by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross add lyricism and depth.
The visuals are also impressive: muted tones, a style reminiscent of Wes Anderson's work, and intimate, toy-like sets all create a unique atmosphere that is hard to tear yourself away from.
The film is certainly not for everyone, but if you appreciate unconventional cinema with deep character development and stylish presentation, it is definitely worth your attention.
