A fantastic dramedy. A provocative satire. A dystopian noir. Magnificent sets and surroundings, which, even though they look a little outdated, still look very stylish and attractive. Terry Gilliam's masterful pen is evident. The overall atmosphere resembles retro science fiction. There is a lot of sitcom humor, but at the same time, there is quite a bit of biting satire about the social and political structure of society. It's kind of like Monty Python. Jonathan Pryce is wonderful. Although most of the actors are hammy, which is not bad and fits the theme, it's still a clown show. Pryce, however, manages to look very cute and natural. There is also a cool and funny Robert De Niro in a small role.
The plot is absurd and very formal. It's like a crazy amusement park ride. It's a love story about a clerk who struggles through the bureaucratic and social obstacles of a crazy future society. And a sad ending about how a good person in this crazy world can only be happy in their dreams.
The film now seems a bit naive and cinematographically outdated, but it's still an excellent and original film. But now it's probably more for true cinephiles.
