A unique entry in George A. Romero's filmography. Undoubtedly, he has other deviations from direct zombie stories (Knights of the Road, Kaleidoscope of Horror, Two Evil Eyes, The Dark Half, The Bouncer), but Monkey Shines is a special case.
The film has a stunning beginning: the director achieves a complete sense of reality from what we see. But a sudden accident creates an instant feeling in the viewer, as if something inside has broken. It's scary to think that this could happen to anyone at any time. With the appearance of Ella the monkey in the life of the paralyzed Allan, a new good streak begins. This state of affairs is fueled by his acquaintance with trainer Melanie.
I don't think the love scene between Allan and Melanie is very appropriate. It could have been implied, but it shouldn't have been shown. I was pleasantly shocked by Ella's punishment. I certainly do not approve of killing animals in movies. But this is a special case.
The film looks very thorough, beautiful, intelligent, and even wise. I recommend it to all movie fans in general, as the film is multi-genre and can appeal to everyone.
