There can be no two opinions about this film, in my opinion. ‘The Golden Child’ is one of the most remarkable films by the incomparable Eddie Murphy, a truly enticing, captivating, and surprisingly timeless spectacle, in the sense that the comedy does not age at all, despite its venerable anniversary age!
Why is this film worth watching now? Because it is an original, witty, incredibly funny, and beautiful comedy that has become a true classic of the genre and one of the best films of the 1980s, a time already rich in strong and vivid comedies.
The Golden Child embodies the spirit of the 1980s—a time of bold experimentation in combining genres, daring but not vulgar humor, and a light touch of romance, sentimentality, and kindness. The Golden Child combines excellent comedy, colored by Eddie Murphy's charm and jokes, with a beautiful and intriguing story about a stolen child who can perform miracles.
The detective-comedy plot is layered with a love story and a bit of mysticism that captivates the imagination. All this is seasoned with elements of action and the atmosphere of a good modern fairy tale. And all this in perfect proportions. In general, the film is wonderful.
Among other things, for its time, the film has a fair amount of decent special effects and looks surprisingly fresh. Of course, Eddie Murphy himself deserves a lot of credit for this. He is so fiery and witty, so noble, masculine, and at the same time simple and funny that it is impossible not to fall in love with his character. This is definitely his role, and he works wonders in it!
Of course, Murphy's character, as always, is surrounded by charismatic villains, beautiful girls, kind and cheerful friends, and everything ends well and happily. This is a true film of the 80s and a true film of the heyday of Eddie Murphy's talent. For those who love Coming to America, Beverly Hills Cop, and 48 Hours, this film will be a gem in their collection.
Incidentally, in 2003, a very similar film called Medallion was released, starring Jackie Chan, which is also not bad, but pales in comparison to The Golden Child. This film is lit up by the flame of Eddie Murphy, and this guy doesn't just burn, he blazes!
