There is a whole series of films about this very Quatermass. British ones. There is a sad story behind this film. It is the only horror film in history that officially scared someone to death. A British teenager's heart stopped at a scary moment in the cinema.
The plot is as follows. Quatermass invented a long-range rocket, whose first flight ended very sadly. The rocket landed unsuccessfully, one astronaut was found on board, and the other two disappeared without a trace. The surviving astronaut is in a state of prostration and cannot explain anything coherently. The cameras on board also failed to shed light on the mystery. On this very mysterious note, the filmmakers could have stopped and made an excellent movie. But the survivor is very attracted to various plants, and in the hospital he enters into symbiosis with one of them, beginning to mutate into a cactus man.
It's a good idea, and the actor who played the surviving cosmonaut did a great job. Unfortunately, the British didn't have the budget of the big American studios, and the special effects, even by the standards of the time, were ridiculous and absurd. On the other hand, the film does a good job of showing the mood of society in the pre-Gagarin era. Quite a few people believed that harmful bacteria dangerous to humans were flying around in outer space.
Another funny moment is that little Jane Asher, Paul McCartney's future girlfriend, appeared in the film.
