For some reason, Clown in a Cornfield feels like a horror film from the 90s—in the best sense of the word. It's rare to see a modern slasher film that pays homage to that era without being overly nostalgic or pretentious. From the harsh, almost voyeuristic cinematography reminiscent of The Blair Witch Project to the witty dark comedy in the spirit of Scream, this film is steeped in the atmosphere of vintage horror, yet feels fresh. It's funny, violent, and smarter than it seems. Behind the chaos of the killer clown lies a witty social commentary on the generation gap, moral panic, and the evolution of the horror genre itself. It has a modern style, but it doesn't lose any of its fun, remaining self-aware but not smug. The humor really works, which is rare in horror comedies, and the pace makes the film dynamic and engaging. Of course, some of the minor characters seem underdeveloped, and the satire could have been developed even further, but overall, this is a film that knows exactly what it's doing: it provokes strong emotions and has something to say. A slasher with style and meaning, that's for sure.
