After the success of the original film, no one doubted that Hammer Studios would inevitably make a film version of the second series about Professor Quatermass. And so, two years later, the sequel was released, more refined and well thought out than the first part. How is it better?
First, it's the plot. Driving along a forest road, Quatermass witnesses a minor accident. The girl behind the wheel tells the professor that her fiancé was burned by fumes from a stone he found. After giving him the fragments, she rushes to the hospital, and Quatermass decides to give them to his assistants for research. The unusual stones turn out to be nothing more than a small capsule that fell from space. Without hesitation, the professor goes to the approximate location of the meteorite's fall and discovers hundreds of similar capsules there. Nearby, he notices a structure that looks exactly like the lunar base he is designing. The main character's personality has also changed. While in the first part he was a colder and more calculating person, here Quatermass becomes more human, thinking not only about science and progress, but also about human lives.
Secondly, in addition to science fiction, two other genres have been better developed: detective and horror. While in the first part the mystery is revealed about halfway through the film, here the intrigue is maintained almost until the very end. This also enhances the horror element. In the first part, the monster itself frightened the viewer, while in the second part it is the unknown that frightens, as almost anyone could be the enemy.
Thirdly, the film now has higher-quality special effects and sets. The alien base deserves special attention. The place really looks hostile—cold and empty, surrounded on all sides by metal pipes.
Putting it all together, we have an original and distinctive film that does not try to be like the endless films about monsters from space that run around the city and destroy all living things. If you liked the idea of the film “Invasion of the Body Snatchers,” then be sure to watch this one too.
