I remember seeing this film quite by chance at the cinema in the late 1980s. I really liked it. It's a wonderful combination of a detective story and a profound human drama. Each of the characters has their own reasons and their own truth. Each of them has loved ones whom they must protect and defend, whose pain becomes your own. And it is very frightening when innocent children become hostages to someone else's hatred, as happens in the film, whose tense and dynamic development of events keeps you glued to the screen for every minute.
The very strong and professional direction of Joel Santoni, who was also one of the screenwriters, as well as the original source material—the novel of the same name by English writer Joan Aiken—ensured an excellent result. I would also like to note the excellent cinematography by Jean Boffetti and Pavel Korinek.
As always, the music by Vladimir Cosma is very good.
The acting in the film is not bad, although it does not make a very strong impression. First and foremost, I would like to highlight Nicole Garcia, Dominique Lavanant, as well as both Jean-Pierres – Bacri and Bisson. Both of the main children's roles were also successful in the film.
