Carol is an amazing film about an eternal theme—love and the obstacles that stand in the way of lovers. Or, more precisely, the love between two women. I won't say that the theme of same-sex love is unusual for modern cinema. On the contrary, directors have recently taken a liking to it and have managed to collect quite a few awards (remember ‘Blue is the Warmest Color’ from two years ago). On the other hand, films on this subject mainly emphasize that the cause of all the misfortunes of lovers is only society's rejection of homosexuality. But the film Carol takes a different approach. Right at the beginning of the film, we hear the main idea from Therese's mouth: she is in love with Carol not because she is attracted to women, but simply because she sees her as a loved one. If you keep these words in mind throughout the film, everything will fall into place. The director does not pity poor lesbian women here; he simply shows us a beautiful and dramatic love story between two people, which could easily have happened between a man and a woman. And that is what makes this film so fresh.
Of course, Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara give stunning performances. It's no wonder they were recognized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, because they give themselves completely to their roles and play the dramatic scenes in such a way that even the most stoic viewers will be moved to tears. But, to be honest, what is even more striking is the whole atmosphere of the film - the lighting, the music, the camera work, the period costumes (the film is set in the stylish 1950s). Everything that happens on screen is so beautiful and harmonious that you want to savor every frame, every detail.
In other words, the film is worthy of your attention and Oscar nominations. Watch it and, as the heroine suggests, forget about prejudices and labels. This is a film about love. A story that could have happened to any couple in love.
