Before us is one of the most amazing and innovative films of silent cinema. It is a film in which director Abel Gance came closest to realizing all his ideas and ambitions. However, even the four-hour version, which is only one-sixth of the director's original plan, does not prevent the film from being one of the most monumental projects in the history of French cinema.
The film tells the story of Napoleon's life, from his childhood to the most significant events in his life. The action in the film develops slowly, but this does not make the film boring.
I believe that the film creates the best image of Napoleon in the history of cinema. Here, Napoleon is a determined patriot, ready to do anything for his country, as well as a brave and talented commander. I think Napoleon was exactly as he was portrayed in this film. Thanks to Albert Dieudonné's acting talent, I was once again convinced that it is possible to understand the emotions, thoughts, and feelings of a character without words or sound.
Of course, the main advantage of this film is the well-staged battle scenes, which were revolutionary for their time and are impressive in their scale.
Perhaps people interested in history will find many inaccuracies in the film. But for me personally, authenticity is not the most important thing, because the film is a work of fiction, not a documentary, and the creators did not set out to tell a completely accurate biography of Napoleon; they simply presented their view of his life to the audience.
As a result, Abel Hans's film Napoleon is one of the most amazing silent films and a so-called silent blockbuster with stunning battle scenes, brilliant acting, and, in my opinion, the best portrayal of Napoleon in film history. This film is a must-see for anyone who loves films with battle scenes, to find out how it all began.
