With its gloomy atmosphere, philosophical dialogues, and complete absence of commercial techniques, this film was clearly not made for money. I first saw this film in 1990, the year it was released. Given my age at the time, I couldn't really understand the film, but I never switched channels. There is a certain magnetism in this film, a magnetism of true and honest art, a bold expression of the director's point of view on good and evil, without fear that all these “creative explorations” will not be understood by the general public and, accordingly, will not pay off at the box office.
The philosophical underlying theme of the film is that the Devil's main weapon is lies, which cloud the mind, lead people astray, and push them to extremes such as murder or suicide.
One of the key phrases in the film, spoken by the positive character, is: “Yes, I believe in God, but I also believe in the Devil...”
He says this out of despair, because his encounter with the “dark forces” has forever changed his worldview, and with a rather pessimistic attitude, the hero of the film, Detective Detweiler, pursues the mysterious Mr. Frost with the aim of stopping his evil deeds, which he continues to commit while being held in a “luxurious” psychiatric hospital (which is more like a sanatorium with all the amenities) for the brutal murder of 24 people.
Mr. Frost does not necessarily have to be nearby to harm a person; sometimes a single glance (or touch) is enough, and then everything happens on its own, as if possessed by a demon...
But what is the main goal of the mysterious Mr. Frost, who remained silent for three years and then, unexpectedly for everyone, suddenly started talking to a female psychiatrist?
Why her in particular? How is she different from the others? Or perhaps he has found his first worthy conversation partner in three years, and a person who could become an unwitting accomplice in his insidious game?
