In 1987, John Woo, inspired by the unexpected success of his first work in his new role, set about making a sequel. Given that the action movie craze was just beginning in Hong Kong, John needed to raise the bar even higher for his brainchild so that everyone else would follow suit.
A Better Tomorrow 2 is an improved version of the first part, in which absolutely everything has been improved: the sequel has more spectacular scenes, more drama, less pathos, and less childish dialogue. The actors now perform even better, especially Chow Yun-Fat. Here, his character is less naive and much more principled.
In general, the plot itself has become more mature and emotional. And one unexpected dramatic twist in the middle of the film surprised me a lot. I didn't think Wu would decide to do that.
As in the previous film, the main merit of the sequel is the beautiful shootouts and fight scenes. Everything explodes, dozens of Chinese corpses, thousands of bullets fired — honestly, some modern action films could envy this film.
Overall, it can be said that Wu is still learning the genre, but he is doing so incredibly quickly and is only improving with each new film.
