They are sitting in the same cell, political prisoner Valentin and homosexual Molino.
One believes that it is wrong to enjoy life while his compatriots are suffering, that it is unworthy of a man, because living by feelings and emotions makes a man like a woman. The other simply falls in love with strong, steadfast, real men who hold their heads high no matter what. Molino's kindness and calm love help Valentin understand something and change his attitude towards something. Valentin, in turn, pushes Marino to rethink his life and ultimately to self-sacrifice.
William Hurt (Molino) is simply magnificent; he is so multifaceted and emotional, yet sincere, that I never doubted the true motives behind his actions for a minute. It's no wonder he won an Oscar for Best Actor.
