So, here we have the fourth film about the adventures of Inspector Clouseau, a great repository of absurdity, clumsiness, and extreme humor, who has now risen to the rank of “senior.” This time, the plot revolves around the completely insane Charles Dreyfus. On the day of his scheduled release from the psychiatric hospital, he is visited by Clouseau and his faithful companions - disaster and destruction.
After such a “friendly visit,” Dreyfus finally goes mad, frees dangerous criminals, kidnaps a scientist, steals dangerous weapons, and destroys the UN building, threatening to do the same to the whole world, unless, of course, they hand Clouseau over to him...
“Tell me, which switch did you use to turn off the light?”
“The light switch, sir...”
We have a stunning, hilarious parody of 1960s spy films. Of course, Edwards has almost completely abandoned detective elements, giving preference to pure, tear-jerking comedy.
As a comedy, in my opinion, this is perhaps the funniest part of the Pink Panther series. Here, Peter Sellers surpassed himself in terms of comedy. I have never seen such a number of jokes, puns, and absurdities in previous and subsequent films. This part can be described as the “apotheosis” of Sellers' work, because after that, his skills went downhill, and it wasn't until 1979, shortly before his untimely death, that he regained his title of “master comedian” in the movie Being There.
