The story follows a female bullfighter who begins to sense changes taking place within herself, while simultaneously feeling a connection to the bulls.
The film’s premise—to depict a woman’s position in a male-dominated society, the image of women in such a society, and the comparison of women to bulls—is intriguing, but its execution falls short.
Worthy of note is the “woman-bull” comparison and the emphasis placed on this animal throughout the entire feature-length film, whether through metamorphosis, shots from various angles, or the presence of a bull or bulls in the frame.
The director’s desire to make a film about a woman and her difficult position in society takes center stage, leaving behind the other components of a successful film: proper development of the idea, plotline, character development, acting, and narrative pace—none of these elements are given sufficient attention or time in the film. The director believed that the central idea alone would be enough for the audience.
None of the characters evoke any emotion throughout the entire film: they are empty figures with unexplored backstories.
The uneven pacing is present throughout the film, making it feel sluggish and drawn-out—the plot doesn’t really get going until the 25th minute, and for most of the film there is no momentum; the murders remain off-screen and only the outcome is shown; there is a single dramatic moment, and only from the 85th minute (out of a 98-minute runtime) does the narrative pick up speed and become engaging: the transformation and murder are shown in full, along with a chase and an open ending.
The film contains details that are never explained or clarified either during the film or afterward, raising a large number of questions related to the film’s central theme—the transformation—and the feature-length finale.
The atmosphere of the film is maintained throughout its runtime through key elements—bulls, a ranch/farm, bullfighters, bullfighting, and the accompanying soundtrack.
“Animale” (2024) is a film lacking proper conceptual development on the part of the director.
