The Substitute 4K 1996

Not only is "The Substitute" one of Tom Berenger’s most compelling roles, but director Mandel’s film also offers a rather intriguing take on the Hollywood trope of undercover work. The main character, a former CIA agent, Shale, takes a job at a Miami school to monitor the activities of the drug cartel. And certainly not to find common ground with the extremely unique students, who are all used to solving problems with force. Instead, the new “teacher” takes up arms himself, because, first of all, he was left with no other choice. And secondly, although the film was originally conceived as a crime drama, its second half is more reminiscent of a classic American action movie from the ’90s. 

When a single hero, gun in hand, takes on an entire army of thugs and ultimately leaves no doubt that everything will turn out fine. That said, Jonathan Sheil is by no means a soulless, unflappable superman who can effortlessly take down a couple hundred armed men and then flash a charming smile on camera. Tom Berenger’s acting talent came in very handy here; he does, after all, possess more than just simple, human charm, and dramatic roles suit him very well. There’s also a certain nostalgia for his most famous character from *The Sniper*, which came out four years earlier, and since then, the actor hasn’t lost a bit of his form or charisma.

And he’s pretty cool as a cold-blooded operative who seems to treat the “bad boys” with a certain degree of leniency, but at the same time is ready to show them they’ve messed with the wrong guy.
Toward the end, ‘The Substitute’ starts to look like a true 90s action thriller, complete with shootouts, fights, and plenty of violence. But not once does it feel like just another mindless and brutal movie churning out of the Hollywood assembly line.
It’s well-made and extremely engaging, primarily thanks to the lead actor. Without Tom Berenger, the film would easily have remained a low-budget flick worth watching just once, like its virtually unknown sequels by other directors.

In my opinion, it’s an excellent crime action film and one of Tom Berenger’s most interesting roles.
