A simple recipe for a good sequel—one that, for some reason, doesn’t always work. It seems straightforward enough: just throw in a couple of the most famous and talented actors, and you’re all set! That’s exactly what happened here. The brilliant Dustin Hoffman and Barbra Streisand fit so naturally into the script for the sequel to *Meet the Parents* that you can’t help but feel the producers had them in mind from the start. Or maybe that’s exactly what happened?
There’s another advantage over the first film. The action shifts to “the groom’s territory,” and this clears the viewing experience of some unnecessary emotions. Let me explain: in the first film, it was sometimes less funny and more painfully awkward for poor Guy Facker. It was just enough to make your ears burn! But here, Guy is already at home, where Mom and Dad are quite the characters! So there are fewer “awkward” moments and more laughs. Although, you’d think, how much more could there be?!
Special thanks to De Niro—what a powerhouse and seasoned actor! He can handle both drama and comedy! Plus, in my opinion, seeing a dramatic actor in comedies is a kind of seal of quality—you won’t get any borderline trash or toilet humor!
