Diabolique 4K 1996

A devilishly beautiful—and seductive!—film. Isabelle Adjani and especially Sharon Stone aren’t just women here; they’re living icons. In every frame. Everything plays into this. The wardrobe, meticulously designed by stylists; the makeup, crafted by makeup artists; the perfect setting—night, or if it’s day, then inevitably gloomy—plus the somber pseudo-Gothic atmosphere of the boarding school where the film’s action unfolds.

However, none of this would matter if it weren’t for Sharon. With her face of icy beauty and impassivity, like that of a marble Medea, and her movements as graceful as a panther’s. In my opinion—as a Sharon fan who has rewatched, more than once, about forty films featuring her, including, of course, both ‘Basic Instinct’ films—here she surpassed herself in the role of a charismatic killer and a carefree woman. She embodied this image—whatever you may call it—but one that is alluring to millions of people in our crazy, crazy, crazy world, even more powerfully than in the star-studded ‘Instinct.’ To the extreme.

It makes sense. So will you surprise us with the role (and the real-life prototype) of a beautiful nymphomaniac with a whole set of accompanying obsessions, for whom all this is permissible simply because she is a carefree, young Californian heiress to 50 million bucks (as it was in *Basic Instinct*)?
It’s a different story in ‘Diabolique.’ She may be devilishly beautiful, but she’s just a schoolteacher who doesn’t shy away from even such a trifle for Hollywood as 50 grand. Her surroundings, colleagues, and neighbors—they’re all befitting of a pseudo-gothic American backwater.
Total dissatisfaction with life, the best years (which, in theory, should be just that) already behind her... Here, she truly has nothing to lose, so why not embark on a deadly adventure?

'But I don’t believe in any of that, and I never have. Not in God, not in the Virgin Mary... Not in the idea that life begins after forty.' The calm confession of the heroine Sharon at the height of the drama in this story is the key to her character, to her cunning—which is revealed in all its glory at the end of the film—and, in general, to the unravelling of this devilry.

What won’t a small person dare to do once they realize that life is not at all the celebration they once imagined it to be at the very beginning! ... If only they could also be devilishly beautiful, calculating, and self-assured. Like Sharon in ‘Diabolique’.
