The Henderson family is returning home to Seattle from a camping trip in the woods. While driving through the forest, they accidentally hit an unusual creature, which turns out to be the so-called Yeti. Thinking he is dead, the Hendersons take the body home, hoping to donate it for research and become famous. But upon arriving home, the Yeti “comes to life” and starts causing a whole lot of trouble.
It’s hard to find fault with a family film whose primary target audience is children. From that perspective, the film is charming, with a simple moral lesson and humor perfectly suited for children. Viewed through an “adult lens,” however, the film fails to fully explore many themes and naturally doesn’t reach the level of serious cinema. That said, I have no particular complaints about the film, aside from its refined naivety.
And most importantly, what the film is famous for is the Oscar-winning work of the renowned makeup artist Rick Baker. It was this genius who created the image of the snowman Harry—truly excellent work that deservedly won an award.
