After the release of the action sports films ‘Bloodsport’ and ‘Kickboxer,’ Van Damme’s popularity skyrocketed, but he decided not to rest on his laurels and continued his climb to the pinnacle of fame. In 1990, the prison action film ‘Death Warrant’ was released.
The film’s plot follows Detective Burke’s secret “mission”: posing as an inmate, he must uncover a series of murders targeting several prisoners and even guards within the prison. But when he discovers who is behind it all, he must avoid a fateful encounter with that person and prevent himself from becoming the next victim of these crimes.
Of course, this film cemented Van Damme’s success. It leaves the viewer with plenty of impressions and emotions. Here, the protagonist must “immerse himself” in the world of incarceration to carry out a dangerous mission. However, compared to another prison action film, ‘In Hell’—in which Van Damme starred 13 years later— ‘Death Warrant’ is lighter and less intense. While in ‘In Hell’ Van Damme’s character—sentenced to life in prison—had to survive in an extremely dangerous prison where danger lurked around every corner, the situation here is simpler: the protagonist voluntarily enters prison after accepting a mission, earns a good reputation, and makes friends among his cellmates. In addition, he has the support of a female lawyer posing as his wife. Of course, the atmosphere of this film is also quite tense, but the protagonist is in peak physical condition, which means it’s much easier for him to endure the hardships of imprisonment than in ‘In Hell’—in the latter, the protagonist, burdened by a constant emotional wound, tries to survive in prison practically on his own.
But in both this first and second prison action film, Van Damme did an excellent job in his role. ‘Death Warrant’ is the first crime action film in this actor’s career. All the actors gave solid performances here. And it must be said that Van Damme has been very lucky with his co-stars: this time, he was paired with the fairly well-known actress Cynthia Gibb. It’s also important to note that the fight choreography in the film is outstanding. To reinforce this, the film features a significantly intense soundtrack. There’s no doubt now about how hard the filmmakers worked: their efforts have paid off. Of course, this film deserves a lot of attention, but still, I’d give it...
