Battle of Britain 4K 1969

This is a truly epic film. Given the quality of the special effects, it’s hard to believe it was made in 1969. The aerial battles are rendered in a very realistic manner: the planes don’t just perform aerobatics and occasionally release smoke to simulate being hit—they also naturally break apart in flight, crash into the ground and water, and drop bombs. Obviously, it’s not “real” planes being destroyed, but models. But everything is done very well. On top of that, the film features a large number of actual aircraft from that era.

As for the dramatic element, things aren’t quite so good here. In any case, the tragedy of the events doesn’t come across as particularly convincing. There are a lot of characters in the film, and for the most part, they simply don’t have enough screen time to develop. On top of that, they’re often stereotypical to serve propaganda purposes.
