Paintings, books, movies, politics, and even lines of dialogue—all of these are acts of creation that can express what it means to be human.

Maybe—or maybe not?

The answer to this question, just as in Xavier Giannoli’s film, lies hidden between the lines of biographies, in the cracks between ideals and actions, in those very “lights and shadows” that illuminate and obscure the same soul.

Jean Luchère, the protagonist of this three-hour epic, was a pacifist in the 1920s, a champion of peace in Europe. He wrote articles, spoke from the podium, and believed that words could stop war. And then he became a media mogul who sold his voice to Nazi propaganda. He didn’t transform into a monster; he simply continued to create. But his work ceased to be a service to an idea; it became a service to profit, fear, and the illusion of control.

The film attempts to reach into the depths of humanity: when we create something, are we expressing ourselves, or are we hiding behind our creativity? And is there a difference between someone who writes poetry and someone who writes propaganda editorials? Or are these simply two sides of the same reality, where the artist and the politician, the actor and the journalist—all of them are merely seeking a way to breathe freely, but sometimes pay too high a price for it?

Creativity as a Collaboration of Conscience

The issue that Giannoli draws our attention to is that any form of self-expression is always a collaboration between conscience and personal choice in life. Lusher was no villain; he was a man who had gazed at the light for too long, failing to notice how the shadow had become part of his face. He began with ideals and ended up before a tribunal and at the firing squad. His daughter Corinne, a brilliant actress, also found herself in her father’s shadow, and her fate became a reflection of his downfall.

The film does not turn Luchère into a caricature, nor does it pass judgment; rather, it shows how easy it is to succumb to self-admiration or to castigate others, even when at the very heart of the creative act lies the same desire—to breathe freely in the clean air. The irony is that Luchère may have sincerely believed he was saving France by collaborating with the occupiers. He deceived himself, and then deceived others.

A Dream of Choice

Like in "Lost Illusions", Giannoli doesn’t let the viewer relax; he grants access to the other side of the story depicted in *De Gaulle*. He condenses the collective dream of an era for a single country.

Jean Dujardin is morally prepared for this role. He penetrates to the very essence of that period. His smile becomes a mask behind which lie bewilderment and horror at his own weakness.

Nastya Golubeva Karaks masterfully accomplishes the task of showing how to portray emotions that aren’t there. She is like a mirror of her father: she, too, creates, but her creativity is an attempt to survive, not to influence the world.

Together, they form a duo that makes us reflect on how often we fail to realize that our own lives are also roles we write ourselves.

“The Rays and Shadows” is about how creativity does not spare us from making choices. It merely lays them bare. Lucher could have remained a pacifist, but he chose power. He could have rejected propaganda, but he chose comfort. He could have admitted his mistake, but he chose self-deception. And in this sense, his story is a newspaper spread revealing the truth.

We all create our own reality: every word, every gesture, every article is a significant gateway—even for our own consciousness, which can bury the beauty within the soul deeper and deeper so as not to notice true beauty when it becomes more comfortable to remain in an intoxicating stagnation.

So as not to realize that it is you who are creating—you are creating not only text or an image, but yourself. And if you are not ready to see your own shadows, sooner or later they will extinguish every ray of light.
