The Last Boy Scout 4K 1991

Movies like this are one-of-a-kind. They never have sequels, and they simply can’t be remade. This is one of those rare instances where everything comes together perfectly on screen. A fantastic team—director Tony Scott, producer Joel Silver, screenwriter Shane Black, and megastar Bruce Willis—makes this film a surefire hit.

We’re in for a classic plot. Joseph Hallenbeck (Bruce Willis), once an excellent cop but now more like a drifter who never puts down his bottle, takes on a new job protecting a young woman without realizing how it will all turn out. The girl will die (yes, yes, yes, that’s exactly what the plot requires so the bad guys can realize who they’re messing with), and it will later turn out that this very drunkard is still in top shape and actually an excellent cop, so he’ll see his investigation through to the end, where the guilty parties will be severely punished.

“I have to live with myself 24 hours a day”

Willis’s character, who first appears to us sleeping in his car—drunk and unshaven—begins to blow our minds with his unreal charisma from the very first frames. This is exactly the Bruce we love—the Bruce who doesn’t give a damn about anyone or anything, who, with just a single glance, a smirk, or a line like: “Nobody loves you, everyone hates you, you’re a loser! Smile, you bastard!”, is capable of keeping absolutely any viewer glued to the screen.

I adore movies like this, and not at all because of a cleverly twisted plot or mind-blowing special effects. The main character’s charisma, the humor, and the indescribable atmosphere and spirit of those years—that’s what the films of the ’80s and ’90s were famous for in the first place (whether it was *Lethal Weapon* or *Die Hard*). Willis’s self-deprecating humor, his unique wit, and the iconic one-liners—enough in *The Last Boy Scout* to fill several movies—come together in a completely crazy plot born from the creative mind of screenwriter Shane Black.

“I’m going to the bathroom—if you want, come with me and help me out. I can’t lift heavy stuff…”
I don’t know why, but I only recently realized that the movie really does have a lot of profanity, so if you want to experience all the charm, humor, and wit of the film, you should watch *The Last Boy Scout* with Mr. Gavrilov’s voice-over, which perfectly captures the film’s mood (the dubbed version isn’t bad either, but it distorts a lot).

It’s always been—and always will be—easy and interesting to write about classics. I’m ready to rewatch these films, made during the golden age of action movies, countless times. “The Boy Scout” will soon be turning 20! Time flies by very quickly, but the film only gets better, and Willis’s line “Water’s wet, the sky’s blue, women have secrets… life’s shit” becomes increasingly clear and close to my heart.
