In 1982, Lucio Fulci, who had previously shot several more than worthy mystical works, decided to return to where he started. The giallo. But, the genre was in crisis. On the other hand, the topic of police detectives about maniacs was more and more interesting. Moreover, just recently, William Lustig filmed his 'Maniac'.
Entering into a correspondence discussion with him about how to properly shoot 'maniac films', Fulci shows a real master class. In his film, everything is in moderation: dynamics, murders, madness, investigations, persecution. If Lustig's film seemed unnecessarily cruel, then Fulci's film has enough. However, the strongest impression on me was made by a pathologist wearing headphones enjoying his work. There was a special realistic grace in this character.
The ending of the film seemed too trivial to me. Therefore, I lowered the score a little. Although, despite its dryness, the picture looks and leaves a very good impression.
How I would like to see this movie with famous actors. Looking at this picture, I imagined who could play the main roles. Personally, I would be interested in such a casting: Tom Berenger, Rock Hudson, Richard Gere. Of course, with their participation, the film would have looked completely different. But even in the resulting low-budget setting, the picture is watchable.
