Today "Vertigo" is one of the iconic films of Alfred Hitchcock, innovative to the extent that it is relevant and modern even after half a century, however, at one time it did not gain much popularity at the box office. Therefore, it is justly considered a film that has bypassed time, not understood by the then viewer, but appreciated years later, as an example of high-quality cinema, which should be equal. The most striking technique from a technical point of view in the film is considered to be a zoom game, with which Hitchcock portrayed the acrophobia of the protagonist, after which the film was named. However, an external illness is compared with emotional experiences, turmoil in the soul due to a sudden and impossible love. This duality accompanies the entire film, in every aspect, as if hypnotizing the viewer.
It was not for no reason that Hitchcock admired the plot virtues of the scripts, feeling this feature in his gut like no one else. Even today, from the depths of his time, he refutes the assertion that action-packed cinema has much in common with entertainment cinema, which, in principle, does not bear any low-grade on itself, but has this subtext regarding the bad taste of mass film production. So the plot of "Vertigo" is dizzying in itself, based not only on intrigue, but also on repetitive motives, which naturally causes some confusion when watching, where it is intensified by the tension created by music and visual images. It was the sense of the plot that allowed Hitchcock to create this amazing game of perception, mysterious and alluring, inseparable from him.
The relationship of the main characters resembles a game of hide and seek, when, with closeness and unity of motives, they are forced to hide themselves from each other. Twice the adventure reaches its peak, and it is symbolic that it happens in the same bell tower, and from that the story told by the master of the detective takes on the charm of a mystical work. However, the last part is no longer a detective story, this is a romantic story imbued with the depth of psychoanalysis, where the ghosts of unconscious manipulations of each other come to replace feelings, the construction of an outwardly ideal image, which is just about to fall in love again and, possibly, even correct past mistakes. The main character here no longer seems to be the glorious fellow he was at first, he is a kind of extravagant spirit of an irrevocably gone past.
The genre frames of "Vertigo" are blurred, there is both the tension of a thriller and signs of a purely Hollywood melodrama, the detective line in its depiction is worthy of the pen of the classics of the genre, but with all this, there is a large share of psychologism passing from chamber polished beauty into a realistic tragedy of great love. All this is accompanied by rare English humor and a significant level of symbolism, and therefore it must be admitted that even plunging into the depths of the subconscious, Hitchcock continued to make high-quality films from a commercial point of view, using light backgrounds and bright acting, saturated with idealized beauty.
