"Shadow in the Cloud" belongs to the films of the mashup subgenre, which movie fans love, but not always the mass audience ("Pride, Prejudice and Zombies", "President Lincoln. Vampire Hunter", "Cowboys vs. Aliens" and "Overlord" were collected in the States less than their budget, that is, in fact, they failed). So "Shadow in the Cloud", which mixes war films and science fiction with horror, did not shine at the national box office. But moviegoers, judging by the estimates of KinoPoisk and IMDb, are not happy. But the film has good criticism. It was interesting to figure out why such polar opinions.
First of all, the origin of the term Gremlin comes as a surprise. Many who grew up watching the cult film of the 80s Joe Dante did not suspect that the "cute" creatures "hail" from the Second World War. And in this context, "Shadow in the Cloud" no longer seems such "game" as one might think at the logline level.
And yet the main confrontation in the film does not take place between the military and a fantastic creature, but within the team. For the theme of the fem-agenda ("garrison cap" against the dorks), the cinema was not accepted by a significant part of the male cinema romance audience.
But if we leave out the "political" aspects of the project, there are not so many minuses. The main ones, perhaps, are that the idea is more like a short film and the final twist raises questions. But otherwise everything is more than good - the leading role Chloe Moretz "holds" the screen, biting dialogues, tension, humor, entertainment (adjusted for still independent production), stylization (made with obvious love for John Carpenter), music.
In general, critics are not stupid and it is not about one fem agenda. The pleasure may be embarrassing, but even now there is not so much of that on the screens of cinemas.
