Chernobyl S01 4K 2019

The film is simply mesmerizing with its apocalyptic atmosphere.

How to deal with an unprecedented man-made disaster, what its real scale is, what sacrifices will have to be made - it does not immediately become clear. Decisions have to be made at lightning speed, although you literally act by touch.

This I, of course, is writing about the film, and not about the real events in Chernobyl, which were the basis for it.

The slogan of the film is 'Find out the price of a lie', and the action begins two years after the disaster.

The external side of Soviet reality is reflected more or less plausibly (of course, with all Western stereotypes on this score). What can not be said about the inner side: the relationship of the chief with subordinates or some deliberate brutality of the characters - high officials and ordinary servicemen of Soviet Mordor. Party and statesmen look like characters from the Cold War films, they are so different from the real ones.

But even this does not spoil the picture, which keeps the viewer in suspense from the first frame of the series to the last and every time it intrigues with the expectation of further development of the action.

To a certain extent, the film is, of course, propaganda. If you wish, you can find a lot of bloopers, cliches, inconsistencies with reality. But why, if it is impossible to tear yourself away from the film?

Chernobyl strikes as a disaster film, not as an investigation or a drama.
