Pixar’s new animated film is a unique look at environmental activism from the inside. At the beginning, we witness the coming-of-age of Mabel, a young heroine who cares deeply about the environment and its inhabitants. A young rebel who grew up in harmony with nature, she is determined to stop the construction of a highway—by any means necessary—that threatens to displace animals from their habitats. In her radicalism, Mabel makes a lucky discovery: a device capable of placing her inside the body of a robot animal, giving her a chance to save the area. However, things are not as simple and straightforward as they seem to the heroine.

The film touches on several themes at once. It is an animated film that begins with a story about humanity’s struggle for nature and against authority, about mistakes, growing up, faith in a better future, and the coexistence of different species. But violent struggle and radicalism turn out not to be the best approach and give way to attempts to gain acceptance, find compromise and reach an agreement, live together, find one’s place, and feel needed and significant by uniting for a common goal.

Overall, these are fairly old ideas, but presented in a new, engaging setting. The very idea of placing a human in the animal world in such a way that there is no hierarchy or prejudice—transforming them from an observer into an active member of the animal community—is quite intriguing. It’s interesting that extremely serious themes—related to relationships with parents and death—are touched upon but serve only as supporting elements. And I think exploring these ideas in greater detail would have been detrimental to a film that already strives to convey so many ideas.

Some details and jokes aimed at an older audience helped brighten up this film. I can’t share the enthusiasm for what I saw, but among the latest Pixar films that aren’t sequels, this is truly the best one in recent years. Nevertheless, I personally didn’t manage to feel any attachment to the main or supporting characters, despite their quite organic portrayal and remarkable personalities. That said, I’ll note that the film never felt boring, and the ending didn’t fall flat—quite the opposite, it delivered far more emotion than the preceding narrative.

Conclusion: a heartwarming, at times genuinely funny and touching animated film that will definitely appeal to the younger generation, but is unlikely to resonate strongly with older viewers. It serves as a reminder that as long as there are those willing to hear and listen, all is not lost on Earth—for animals as well as for us.
