Every day, nuclear power plants around the world produce huge amounts of radioactive waste, which is placed in temporary storage facilities that are vulnerable to both natural and man-made disasters. The world's first permanent repository for radioactive waste is being created in Finland - it is carved into the rock. It is an extensive system of tunnels where waste can be stored for 100,000 years, that is, as long as it remains radioactive. When the repository is full, it will be sealed so that it can never be opened again. But is it possible to warn our distant descendants of the deadly danger this waste will pose for many thousands of years to come, and prevent the burial site from being opened as just another pyramid, mysterious tomb or treasure house? Will descendants understand our language and the symbols we left behind? And if so, will they follow those instructions? And while huge machines chisel tunnels in the rock, experts are trying to find ways to solve this crucial problem - to ensure the safety of mankind not only now, but also for millennia to come.
