Somewhere at the end of the world, farmer Ingvar lives with his wife Maria. After the tragedy experienced in the past, the couple fenced themselves off from the whole world. Time literally froze in this cold Elysium. But one day, on Christmas Eve, a mysterious guest appears on the farm of Ingvar and Maria, after which the lives of the heroes change dramatically.
I think Valdimar Johannsson deliberately filled his picture with biblical motifs in order to confuse the well-prepared audience of the festival cinema. And he did it. It is enough to read the opinions of viewers and reviews of critics who interpret the picture "The Lamb" not only as a new revelation, not just as an ecological pamphlet.
In my opinion, considering the plot of the film in a certain meta-context prevents a more subtle understanding of it. The Lamb is a little movie. Despite the rather specific plot, Johannsson came out with a surprisingly light narrative, seasoned with a pinch of shock and mysticism. The tape comes to life especially noticeably when Ingvar's brother, the unfortunate musician Petur, arrives at the farm, testing the strength of the idyllic reality built by the heroes.
A rather sharp and unexpected ending, which at some point just comes, dirty and unceremoniously, only emphasizes Johannsson's main idea. The past cannot be returned. Scientists are still only speculating about the possibility of time travel. The moral side of the issue is not at all in doubt. What happened, happened. The blows of fate, even the most unfair ones, must be accepted boldly, and not hide from one's own past in a world of illusions.
The director took care not only of the content of the picture, but also of the form. The film is incredibly beautiful. But this is a special Scandinavian, cold beauty - the beauty of Numi Rapace, which only gets prettier over the years. Juicy green plains in the frame are fenced by sharp mountains scratching the sky, along which fast rivers flow and thick fog spreads. In this world where heaven speaks to earth, it is easy to forget, especially when the heart is filled with sadness.
