Mickey 17' is a dark, angsty sci-fi comedy about a world where life has long since lost its value, becoming a mere tool in the hands of the elite. The upper class, cloaked in religious rhetoric, cynically uses cloning and 'expendable' humans in colonization missions.
To escape his debts on Earth, Mickey Barnes (Robert Pattinson) agrees to become 'expendable' for a long-term space mission, which means he may be endlessly assigned risky, potentially lethal work, resulting in multiple agonizing deaths that he is reminded of every time he is reprinted on a 3D bioprinter.
The movie turns out to be topical, satirical, and downright crazy. Mark Ruffalo, who plays a corporate dictator, seems to have re-watched Trump's speeches specifically before filming, so cartoonishly does he fit the character.
'Mickey 17' is no 'Parasites', but the trademark mockery of social and political issues feels even stronger here. Instead of the standard speeches of resistance, the movie offers a pessimistic view of a society in which everything has long since been sold and recycled into cheap entertainment. And the result is a chaotic, in places ridiculous, yet frighteningly truthful commentary on a world in which people are not worth more than a piece of plastic.
But even despite all this, 'Mickey 17' remains a comedy. True, the laughter here is nervous, hysterical - like a man who has realized that there is no way out. This movie reminds us that progress is not always a good thing, and the future may not turn out the way we hoped. It's ironic that the most alive character turns out to be the one who was originally created only to die.
This movie is definitely not for everyone, but if you like dark humor, caustic satire and Pattinson as a tormented man teetering on the edge of insanity, then 'Mickey 17' is definitely worth a watch.
