In 2014 'John Wick' appeared on the screens. This unpretentious action about the adventures of a retired hitman conquered many people and set a new vector in the creation of action films. Now everyone wants his John Wick, that is: stylish, brutal, dynamic. Navot Papushado, who got out of Israel into the world of big cinema, decided to try this time.
So here we have the story of Eva (Karen Gillan), who works for a certain firm and kills people on commission. As usual, at one point she is forced to betray them and goes to all the trouble, launching a thousand occasions for what we have gathered for: a hurricane brawl. That is, the visuals.
And, indeed: absolutely every frame from this picture can be put on the wallpaper in your phone, or hung on the frame. Visually, it's a very well-defined picture, in which you can sometimes guess whether it's Nicholas Winding Röfn or Wes Anderson. But both visually and narratively, 'Gunpowder Cocktail' is a kind of comic book movie.
This film has no source material, the script is completely original, but the totally comic book style is maintained completely. These are both static shots and fight scenes, as if descended from the colorful pages. It's an impossible beauty.
'Gunpowder Cocktail' is a picture far from being about dialogue or a dashingly twisted plot. Here the good girls beat up the bad guys, and that is the main disadvantage of the whole work: it is too feminist. But beauty saves everything. It's the triumph of form over content and a successful stylization. If you want style, go to the movies; Papuchado has got the best of it.
