On the evening of the 1935 Academy Awards, the rather modest film It Happened One Night suddenly took all the top honors. "There were no elaborate costumes or mind-blowing sets in the film. But it was a subtle and sincere story that deserved all its awards.
An absolutely simple story (even by the standards of 1934.) played out by a brilliant director and two wonderful actors. At first glance, it's a pretty ordinary road movie with a 'switched' personality, but it's actually a monument to the era: bus travel, chaste relationships and loose humor.
The relationship between the characters would later find its way into all the later films (don't be surprised if you've seen it somewhere before), and the screenwriters would draw inspiration from revisiting this masterpiece. And the fact that the film is in black and white gives it a special nostalgic charm, that things used to be different, and never will be.
Conclusion: You are bored with romcoms, come here. Romantic, funny and tastefully done.
Kudos to Frank Capra for this film.
