With Daybreakers (2009) Michael and Peter Spierig (Captain Blood, Saw 8: Jigsaw) delivered a great piece of big vampire cinema. This vampire story is finely staged with a first-class cast – including Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe, and Sam Neill. There is no speaking in the first few minutes, instead, the film creates atmosphere through its images of a futuristic city at night, inhabited by vampires, and an atmospheric soundtrack. In general, the look is one of the best things about the film. The sterile, bluish, dark world of vampires creates a beautiful contrast to the warm temperate world of humans. Camera work and editing are always on a decent level. However, Daybreakers seldom uses the chance to create extraordinary settings. Daybreakers has become a solid vampire horror film that has its moments, but its weaknesses do not push it beyond the mediocre genre. The story itself is quite original and differs significantly from other vampire films. Now on 4K Blu-ray and Dolby Atmos. We are rather fond of the old fashioned DVD hardware, and not so taken by the Blu-ray but if you show a little restraint, the results are often quite nice looking.
