And it is very underrated. It is unclear why the picture failed in the USA, after which director Kincke Asher, who was supposed to shoot commercials before that, never got around to making anything else. The film had a full set of reasons to become a box-office success: great actors; fantasy plot; very good special effects; good and sometimes very good humor; cool, stylish camera work; one very unexpected and funny turn of plot; and, finally, good directing. Personally, I like Greg Kinnear as Captain Awesome the best. He played it absolutely brilliantly. Janine Garofalo, dragging her daddy's skull in a bowling ball, on the other hand, I didn't like for some reason. The film could have been cut by 30-40 minutes without any problems (thus, they would have saved a part of the budget which was rather insignificant); there are silly moments, in the spirit of teenage Hollywood, and the whole superhero mentality, in spite of the fact that they mock at it, breaks through in the end. But overall, the picture is much more successful than unsuccessful, and very curious. It's worth watching for at least the first ten minutes, by which you can clearly see that it's bright and talented. I wish someone in Hollywood would take Kinka Usher under their wing. Don't let him go to waste!
