I love action movies starring Liam Neeson. I have loved them for a long time and devotedly. But with sadness I have to note that the quality of these films is constantly and steadily decreasing. I thought they could do no worse than "The Honest Thief". But they did! And here is a new picture with a stern pensioner Liam in the leading role - "A Game of Shadows". Sort of a spy and crime thriller. With a title in the vein of a dashing action movie about Hobbs, Shaw and co.
Evil FBI super-agent for dirty deeds... And as it is, this theme has been ridden mercilessly since "Enemy of the State" (a nice movie with Will Smith and more). And there was also a good old book, which was translated and published in our country back in the Soviet Union - the novel "Document R".
The trouble with the movie is that it is more than completely poisoned by the actual story. Angry white rednecks, a progressive dark-skinned journalist, a middle-aged white man - the main villain... And a young progressive politician (taken from Oxasio-Cortez?). Cliché upon cliché. And the second trouble of the picture is the cardboard script. With a lot of assumptions and stretching. And with elements of apparent fiction. But the main audience of the painting are adults, not teenagers. But who do the filmmakers take us for...
But there is a ray of light in a dark kingdom. And his name is Liam Neeson. Because he's the only one who saves this picture as much as possible. Gives it a chance for one viewing. Liam is great at both action and drama. And it's just a pleasure to watch him. He's just good! By the way, it would be interesting to compare his character to a similar character played by Mel Gibson in the x/f "Retaliation."
And even the already stale clichés (not a young man with a very specific experience and family problems) do not prevent to admire this game.
In general - a cinco only for the most loyal viewers of L. Neeson.
