I love this movie! I went to see it twice at the cinema, then bought the VHS tape, and then the DVD so I could watch it in English. Then I got hooked on the books and fell even more in love with the characters!
It's an excellent film, original, and it perfectly “dilutes” the already tiresome standard ‘cocktail’ of movies about maniacs, walking dead, and other Spider-Men, which are churned out by the dozen. “The Master of the Seas” is not mass-market entertainment, it is Cinema.
Of course, it's not for everyone, but I'm exactly the kind of person who loves it! I love EVERYTHING about it, from the first frame to the last.
And the doctor didn't disappoint at all; he's just like he is in the books. He talks boldly to Jack because they're best friends; they became friends when Jack wasn't captain yet. He cuts everyone down because in those days, every self-respecting man knew how to fight, and fencing was taught from an early age. As for the fact that he patched himself up without feeling any pain... In my opinion, the operation scene is one of the best in the film. He felt the pain. He just endured it. Because he's a man.
