When I read the collected works of Stefan Zweig, the most accurate characterization I could give to what I read was 'reverent. But I'm not talking about the books now, I'm talking about the movie based on Zweig's short story. I haven't read the particular thing, but the film is definitely in the spirit of the writer. And I still can't think of a more accurate characterization.
Black and white film, late 19th century, a famous musician and a letter...a letter from the stranger who had loved him all his life. And he spent his whole life looking for her. No, they had even met. He just didn't notice it.
There and love, carried through the years, and falling in love with an imaginary image, and fatal errors, and romance donzhuana, wishing to seduce the next beautiful woman, and forgiveness loving woman ... But it's not about the story. It's the stunning subtlety of conveying feelings and emotions, the smallest and fragile facets of life, the sad irony...
And also, the film is simply beautiful. Like a work of art.
