Three people find themselves in an old, gloomy mansion, as they believe, to treat their insomnia. But Dr. Murrow has his own opinion on the matter. He wants to study the nature of fear, and he chooses to do so in a place shrouded in many legends and a terrible mystery. The guests have no idea what horror awaits them. The nearest town is a few miles away, and there's not a soul around to hear their cries and come to their rescue.
A remake of the 1963 classic, Ghost of the House on the Hill is a true example of a horror film, something not often seen in modern cinema. Spectacular, gloomy, but, on the whole, very atmospheric film will attract your attention from the very first minutes of viewing. An interesting, original plot, fast-paced events and gloomy atmosphere do their job - the film hits close to home. In addition, I am always impressed by horror movies about dead children, a win-win theme for this genre.
I was surprised to see Catherine Zeta-Jones and Owen Wilson in the frame. It was the first time I saw Catherine in an unusual role for her, and even in a horror movie. Her Theo was just great! Such a role suits her very well, it was nice to see the actress in a slightly different role.
I would also like to mention the performer of the role of Dr. Murrow, Liam Neeson. Unfortunately, the actor got a relatively small role, but he played it perfectly. I even liked his a little bit egotistical and, as Theo called him in the movie, insensitive character, and we can take all the credit for that from the actor.
The lead actress, Eleanor, Lily Taylor, was also good. She was basically the one who set the atmosphere, and the rhythm of the movie. The half-crazy facial expression, sometimes twisted with fear - this kind of acting deserves just a big round of applause.
What else can we add? Director Jan de Bont did his best. Immediately noticeable director's view of the terrifying legend, his own presentation of the material. I would also like to note the special effects of the picture. Huge arms stretching from the ceiling, the silhouette of ghosts under the developing curtains, and, of course, the house itself - large-scale, spectacular, unique, majestic and at the same time chilling!
Huge respect to the director and his whole team for a truly scary and atmospheric film. I'm still under the impression of what I saw. The film definitely deserves the highest praise and the highest score! It's recommended for horror movie lovers as well as for cinephiles and fans of worthwhile movies!
