While it is indeed a prequel to 'Lambs', set after it, I cannot and do not want to consider the movie as part of the Hannibal trilogy. Much less view it as a remake of 'The Hunter'. This movie is special to me for many personal reasons: Ed Norton is my favorite actor, and the movie is the very first one I watched in the original. And I recommend it to everyone, because the voice and intonation of Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal is 50% of his acting in this movie. But about everything in order.
This is a good quality thriller, filmed according to all the laws of the genre, with observance of all the traditions. In front of us are two psychopaths-maniacs, very different, but both familiar and understandable: one - crippled by abuse in childhood, with a bunch of complexes, and the second - 'talented psychopath', with its own rules of the game, with its ideology, inner strength, which identifies its role almost with the role of Mr. God. Both characters succeeded to glory. And if we are used to Hannibal and he is familiar to us, we already know that he is very interesting and good, then the 'tooth fairy' played by Rafe Fiennes had to win our attention. And he succeeded, imho of course. We pity him, we want to hide him from this world, to correct him, to change his mind, even to love him, as the blind heroine Reb did.
The only drawback of the movie can be considered the unresolved theme of the legend of the red dragon. After all, the psychoanalysis of the tooth fairy's behavior is tied to it, and it is too unclear to us what this theory of murders conceals in itself.
Separately I would like to note not so much Edward Norton, but the character of his hero. This is a man whose life is closely connected with murder, with blood, with which he wants to untie himself, but he can not, too tied up in it. For such a person to live a normal life and not be afraid of anything is almost impossible. And this endless anxiety makes him look sickly, tired of life. I think Ed coped on five points, and in appearance he initially suited, he has something tortured in his face.
In general, the movie is worthy of attention. Maybe it will not shock, but the pleasure of the tape will get anyone who appreciates the goodness and quality in the movie.
