Alphaville is not a city, not a century. Alphaville is a test. He who resigns dies.
With this movie, Jean-Luc Godard is trying to wake us up. A sharp light in our eyes from the screen - “Wake up!”. Moments without sound - “Listen!”. “Be Yourself.” Stand with your backs to the shared sun.
Each of you has something to say to yourselves - but why are you afraid to hear it?
Why are we still dying - and shooting those who are already alive?
In a life where words are lost every day, where there is no time but the present, Godard draws three signs. The arrow on the screen “back” means to regain consciousness, to experience feelings again. “Forward” is to enter Alphaville and dissolve without a name. “Down” is to die to the water dancing over a still warm corpse. He's killed because he cried....
Smiling is easier than crying. And “in the south it's sunny and in the north it's snowing. Where shall we go?”
We've learned to walk - and we're used to walking. But we walk without stopping.
We learned to speak - and we become repetitive. But when we say it, we don't feel the meaning.
“Because” - no need to explain. “Why” is more dangerous - it makes us look for answers.
How many new words do we invent? And how many are lost?
“crimson, weep, light of autumn, tenderness...”.
Alphaville has invented a new method of execution. Electric chairs in the theater throw corpses into the orchestra pit. And - methods of pardon?
“- What is 'consciousness'?
- Death is in the conversation.
- What is the advantage of death?
- Not to die anymore.
- What turns night into day?
- A poem.”
Your answers are illogical, and for Alphaville, that's a judgment. Here the Dictionaries are called the Bible.
“I shoot because I'm too old to argue,” declares ”003.” But it is not a gunshot, but a woman's thin voice that cuts through the hoarseness and fear of the world. How many poems, how much tenderness and beauty in the words of one who does not remember the word “tenderness”. How many movies have been made about love? And Godard has one scene that encapsulates all love.
“If far away, it's hate. “If close, it's love. He didn't save himself because he had a gun. She just remembered what it means to love. He what it means to fall in love.
The day we forget everything is the day we die. And as long as we remember at least three words, “I love you,” we have hope of remembering everything else.
With his movie, Godard teaches us to feel. Don't be afraid: you can erase a number from a body. They don't write numbers on hearts.
