When I saw Breakdown for the first time many years ago, I gave the movie a solid eight. The second and third viewings made me reconsider my assessment - Breakdown was clearly a nine. And today it dawned on me: it's a perfect thriller, what's the big deal?
The first half of the movie is, of course, a reimagined version of Spielberg's “Duel”. The same sweltering sunny day, a deserted road, a provincial diner, a red-colored family car, a devil's truck and “some devilishness”. Next, the maps are revealed, but that doesn't make it any worse. On the contrary.
The tension does not leave the viewer for 95 minutes. Unexpected turns of the plot are distributed in an even layer. Great acting. And, what I especially like - bright types of negative heroes with the absence of stupid supermanhood in the positive. Everyone can get in the nose, and everyone can drop a gun from his belt.
One of K. Russell's best roles. What is there, there was a place to turn around.
