I'm very ignorant of old French cinema. I just don't always understand it. I saw this movie by accident. A nice man told me about it. I immediately read the description of the movie, it became very interesting. I found it and started watching it. And now, I want to tell you a little about this movie.
I didn't even notice the length of the movie at first, and this movie goes on for three hours and almost thirty minutes. Someone may think that the movie will be heavy, but in fact it is very pleasant and interesting to watch. Therefore, it flies by very quickly. Only before you watch it, you need to know what the French New Wave is. Well, simply, this movement in cinematography had special standards. And this movie should be listened to. You can even turn off your monitor and turn up the sound on your speakers. The movie has no action, just dialog.
The movie reminded me of the early works of Jarmusch and Godard, but if in these directors the protagonists could keep silent and do something, in Jean Estache's movie the protagonists will constantly talk, occasionally interrupting to start talking again. In front of us is an absolute monologue, which will last all three and a half hours. The main character will talk about life with his girls, about love, about death and about sex. There will be a lot of talking about sex, the main characters will very often be in bed, so the movie is clearly forbidden to young people.
Jean Estache has made a very clever movie. They don't make movies like this now, and they never will. This era is long gone, and we can only watch the characters. And either agree with their thoughts or disagree.
It's a pity that this gifted director passed away so early. The movie received various honorary awards, and absolutely deservedly so. I would also like to mention three main actors in this movie, they are Jean-Pierre Léaud, Bernadette Lafont and Françoise Lebrun. It was very interesting to watch them, and at the end of the movie, when Françoise Lebrun said her monologue, I had a lump in my throat, it was very sad.
The movie is shot in black and white and is hard to find, but if you are interested in French cinema and like intelligent dramas, be sure to watch this curious picture. I'll give the movie the highest possible rating. A masterpiece.
