In general, I'm an old hand at horror movies. I've reviewed a lot of them, and I'm kind of used to scrimmers, suspense, infernal images and psychological pressure. But this project really kicked my ass. There was a comparison with The Witcher, but The Witcher, with all its pluses, is much lighter. I don't even know what to compare it to, except Omen on first viewing.
At first I thought it was a chupacabra movie. A farm in the south, goats, emaciated corpses... But it's even worse than that. The movie consists almost entirely of scenes of horror, it trivially does not give you a break, one crazy picture follows another. Still, it's like 1408, but King's masterpiece is less creepy. It's really brutal.
The techniques seem to be banal, but they are so competently realized that this banality is not felt. The movie has an awesome atmosphere of infernal madness, and the visuals complement this feeling with creepy images of fire, blood, and wilderness.
The movie has a rather low score, I think precisely because the movie is too cool. This kind of spectacle is not for everyone, it's really a kind of violence on the viewer. This is what the author of Funny Games said, that in the pursuit of emotions the authors constantly strengthen and improve the methods of influence, to the point of sadism. And this feeling is for the amateur.
Perhaps the movie got under the mood and I'm a little too much with impressions, but I'm not sure about it. This is really a very serious and competent project. Fans of horror movies should watch it, the rest at their own risk.
