The Italian version of the movie 'The Last House on the Left', released a couple of years after Wes Craven's movie, showed an absolutely identical story, but with a slightly different perspective. The plot is the same: bastards kill two girls, accidentally get into the house of the parents of one of them, they get to the truth and begin to dispose of the gang members.
However, the Italian version is more substantial in its essence. The movie is full of clever philosophical conversations, rich interesting dialogues, a lot of embedded meaning on the topic of how society generates violence and similar topics. The characters are much more vivid and developed, unlike Craven's American movie, and there is a lot more suspense, tension and a more serious approach to directing.
There is amazingly beautiful music in the movie, especially in the opening credits, changing at the right moment to a tense scrambling that creates the atmosphere of the climactic scenes of the movie. The compositions selected for the film are very well adapted to the video sequence, perfectly complementing the film with their bright colorfulness.
But there is less nudity and blood compared to the American movie. There are not many erotic scenes here, but they are there and they decorated the video sequence of the picture quite well. But the Italians still miscalculated about blood and dismemberment. There were few spectacular murders in Craven's movie. Here on the visual presentation and spectacularity clearly saved money.
But the movie surpassed the Americans in the brutality of the scenes themselves. Episodes of rape are staged much more clearly and tensely, the murders are very original, starting from the deprivation of virginity with a knife, to piercing male genitals with metal stakes. Brutality is really on the height, but it would be possible to add to all this more spectacular brutally dismembered corpses, all the same on make-up Italians have always been famous for their cinematography, and this movie was a sad exception.
The actors are chosen perfectly, bright appearance, obvious talent of acting, revealing the characters and their personalities. The variety of dialogues and actions, together clearly placing all the accents in the characters. Beautifully scripted characters, equally perfectly played by a strong cast. Unlike the lethargic and unsightly characters of 'The Last House on the Left', here you can observe really talented bright images, memorable after watching the movie.
Quite a successful Italian picture based on the American movie, which turned out much better than its prototype. Tense powerful horror movie with violent scenes, talented characters, great music and good direction. The movie lacked only peculiar originality and spectacular scenes of violence with plenty of blood and, say, torn limbs.
