It's a good French movie. It smells directly of French wine warmed by the hot sun.
A true story about how, trying to revive his ancestral farm, a hunchback (Gerard Depardieu) lays his life on the altar of his neighbors' meanness - they blocked the spring on the farm, which caused a drought and, as a consequence, the decline of the entire rabbit farming operation. The greed and self-interest of the neighbors hiding under a grimace of friendly hypocrisy - the worst that can be. And as truthfully played by Yves Montand and Daniel Auteuil (the dastardly fool), you can't take your eyes away.
This is a real drama, but it is watched in one breath, with life humor, with hope for the best, for justice.
Depardieu is magnificent, even with a hump - the scene where he shouts to the heavens, takes the soul ... Interestingly, the role of his wife performs Elizabeth Depardieu - the actor's real wife. She also plays in the sequel to the movie ‘Manon from the source’, but about this another time....
