Sabrina is a young and pretty girl. Her father works as a chauffeur for an old millionaire named Larrabee, who has two sons. The older one, Linus, is a smart and successful businessman. He is cold-blooded and very lonely. The younger one, David, is lazy and loves expensive cars and beautiful women. He has been married three times and has decided that family values are not for him. Sabrina loves David, but he doesn't even notice her. Soon she has to leave for France to study at a culinary school, but she is not happy about it. Every day, she follows David around the estate like a shadow until she witnesses him on a date with a rich young woman. Sabrina cries, her heart breaks into pieces, and the thought of suicide takes root in her mind. Fortunately, she does not succeed in her plan. The next day, she leaves Long Island and goes to Paris. At this time, Linus (Humphrey Bogart) takes his business to a new level and decides to marry off his wayward brother David (William Holden) profitably. The bride is the wealthy heiress Elizabeth Tyson (Martha Hyer). David resists the idea for a long time, but eventually agrees. Ten days before the wedding, the wonderfully transformed Sabrina arrives from Paris. David is enchanted and instantly forgets his fiancée. Linus senses that the wedding and the deal may not go through and takes matters into his own hands.
Sabrina is a comedy by American director Billy Wilder, known to us all for his film Some Like It Hot. This film is a charming adaptation of Samuel Taylor's sensational play Sabrina. It is the second brilliant role for the young actress Audrey Hepburn.
They say the filming took place in a tense atmosphere. Humphrey Bogart simply couldn't stand Audrey, while William Holden fell in love with her at first sight. They even dated, but first of all, Holden was 36 years old, and secondly, he couldn't have children. This unpleasant fact was decisive for Audrey, and she broke off her close relationship with William. Bogart was the biggest star in this film. He had been acting in movies for two decades, but this was his first job for Paramount. He probably had a very difficult personality, but how can one explain the fact that he also managed to fall out with the director? Rumor had it that the disagreement arose over the script and the comedic monologues, which Bogart found completely unfunny.
And yet, despite everything, the film Sabrina was released and instantly became the highest-grossing film of the year. Critics applauded enthusiastically, audiences filled movie theaters, and women copied Audrey Hepburn's outfits, created by French couturier Hubert de Givenchy. It was at this time that the young actress became a style icon. Soon, the film was nominated for five Oscars: Best Director, Best Actress, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography, and Best Art Direction. Unfortunately, it won only one: Best Costume Design. Sabrina also won a Golden Globe for Best Screenplay.
I really liked this film. Excellent actors, beautiful music, an unexpected ending! Everything is done subtly and tastefully. However, any film with Audrey Hepburn is distinguished by its extraordinary sophistication. Why? It's simple. She is different. She is not a star, not an actress, and not a sex symbol. So who is she? Her fans provide a more appropriate answer. They call Audrey the magical fairy of Hollywood...
